Five young friends piled upChildren are a vital part of the ministry at Hibben. Our Children's Ministry includes a number of programs for all children starting as infants and going through the 6th grade. We strive to plan activities for children which will create a firm foundation on which they can build a deep and lasting relationship with Jesus Christ.  We incorporate Bible study, crafts, music, fellowship, and service to create a vibrant and welcoming place for all children.

This page contains current information about Children's Ministry at Hibben including Sunday School, CrossWalk, Children's Church, special events and any notices to parents.

So jump in to the fun!  Come to Sunday School or join us for one of our special events.  For more information, please contact Elizabeth Connell, Hibben's Director of Youth & Children's Ministry, at (843) 884-9761 or via our Contacts page email.

Sunday School

Sunday School classes are offered for children of all ages beginning with infants and going through the 6th grade. Hibben uses a Cokesbury curriculum series that offers age-appropriate resources and compliments the Methodist calendar. The various Sunday classes along with their location are listed in the right column of this page.

Children's Church

We've taken great strides to make Children's Church a place where children ages 3 - 3rd grade can feel alive and excited to worship on Sunday mornings.  Music, crafts, drama, and stories are used to help children worship God.  Children's Church is lead by Safe Sanctuary certified adults.  Every Sunday, with the exception of Christmas Sunday and Easter Sunday, the children in attendance at the 10:30 service and at The Well (10:45) are invited to go to Children's Church. They return from Children's Church to their families just prior to the Benediction.

Nursery

We are excited to announce that Hibben now has two nurseries on Sunday mornings: one for infants and another for toddlers.  We know that the addition of a second nursery will insure that all children receive the attention, care, and love they deserve.  In addition, a nursery is provided for every church sponsored event and most children's events.  Our staff of loving adult care givers are all CPR trained for infants. They are assisted by responsible adults and youth volunteers.  Beepers are available to parents using the nursery in case they need to be contacted. Each child is signed in and released only to their parents or guardian.

CrossWalk

crosswalk.jpgCrossWalk is moving!  Normally, we offer this program for kids ages 3 years - 6th grade on Wednesday evenings.  But this fall, we're moving it to Sunday afternoons.  Join us for a kid-friendly lunch and then to practice Christmas music, which we'll sing for the worship services on December 18.  Here are the details:

Who: Pre-K - 6th grade (ages -3 - 11)

When: November 13 & 20, December 4 & 11 from noon to 1:00pm.

Schedule (for all ages):

Noon: Lunch in the CLLC
12:30: Music practice, kids divided by age group.

Volunteers Needed! If you would like to help lead music or assist a teacher, Contact Elizabeth Connell at 884-9761.

Confirmation Class

confirm_retreat_2004.jpg

This class is held annually to help young persons, ages 12 (6th grade) and over, to understand and affirm their faith.

Confirmation 6th grade and Confirmation 7th grade both take place during the Sunday School hour. The 6th grade year focuses on learning how to navigate through the Bible,  as well as learning what our United Methodist vows of committing ourselves to our church through our Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service and Witness really mean.  The class will go on a retreat to Epworth-By-The-Sea United Methodist Retreat Center on St. Simons Island, Georgia, for a weekend of learning and relationship building.

The 7th grade year follows the "Claim the Name" curriculum from Cokesbury.  They will learn the history of United Methodism, as well as what we as United Methodists say we believe about God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and the many doctrines of our denominations.  The 7th graders go on a spiritual life retreat where they focus on their commitment to "Claiming the Name" of Jesus Christ as their own when they become confirmed in May on their 7th grade year.

If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Roberts. You can contact Jennifer via our Contacts page email, or (843)270-1161.

Vacation Bible School

VBSEach summer, Hibben holds a week long Vacation Bible School (VBS) for ages 3 years through 6th grade. Each day of VBS is filled with songs, stories, crafts, food and fun as the children get to know more about God and his love.  Stay tuned for the dates and them for VBS 2012.  Until then, check out this recap of the fun we had during Spirit Week in June 2011:

spirit_week_logo_2011_2.jpgVBS 2011 was held June 12 – 15 for Spirit Week, where we learned how God helps us through the Holy Spirit. If you were 3-years to 6th grade, this was the place to be!  We enjoyed daily themes like Team Color Day, PJ Day, Hat Day, and Water Day, along with crafts, music, games, Bible story time, pep rallies, parades, snacks, and more! Space is usually limited, so sign-up early using the registration form which is available in PDF format on our Publications page.

Volunteers Needed! No VBS would be complete without a team of dedicated volunteers. If you can lend a helping hand, please contact Elizabeth Connell at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 884-9761. No matter your talents or gifts, we can find a place for you! Team leaders, craft, game, music, snack leaders, prayer team members, set designers, family meal coordinators, registration assistants…we need you! Childcare will be available for children of volunteers.
